Research Interests

The lab is working at the interfaces of ecology, biogeochemistry, analytical chemistry and atmospheric chemistry. We strongly believe that interdisciplinarity is currently needed to tackle current complex environmental issues. Our overall research objective is to understand how pollutants and nutrients move in the environment, interact with each other, and what are their effects on the functioning of ecosystems.

Research Interests

The Hayes group carries out research in the domains of atmospheric chemistry and surface chemistry. We are interested in characterizing atmospheric particulate matter to better understand its composition, sources, and optical properties. Particular matter is an atmospheric pollutant that is responsible for millions of deaths each year and it also plays an important role in climate change. Another area of research in the group is studying the physical and chemical interactions of pollutants with polymer and mineral surfaces, which are important for remediation technologies and the prediction of pollutant fate.

Research Interests

Lie in the field of “molecular” environmental chemistry. Our group specializes in determinations of bioavailability and mobility for trace metals and metal-based nanomaterials. The work on nanoparticles attempts to quantify their fate (dissolution, aggregation) and bioavailability (bioaccumulation, genomic and proteomic effects). Current projects on metals are examining the nature of the physicochemical processes influencing trace metal bioaccumulation; in understanding how complexation and the presence of multiple contaminants affects bioavailability; and in determinations of trace metal speciation.

Research Interests

Sauvé’s group works on the analysis, fate and impacts of emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals, surfactants, cyanotoxins, endocrine disruptors and pesticides. The work combines method development for liquid chromatography, solid phase extraction, mass spectrometry along with water treatment process, environmental fate from wastewaters and soil amendments and the biological impacts of such contaminants.
