2025 International Graduate Student Forum in South Africa

Grad student group work

The 8th International Graduate Student Forum, co-hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand and UNA Europa, convened this year in the scenic setting of Acornhoek, South Africa, following the 9th Annual Science & Policy Workshop. Hosted at the Wits Rural Facility, the forum welcomed 83 participants representing 18 institutions across 10 countries.

This year’s forum was marked by a vibrant blend of intellectual engagement, cultural exchange, and environmental immersion. Students kicked off the forum with a dynamic speed-introduction session—a fun and fast-paced way to meet fellow participants and set the tone for an open, collaborative environment.

Each day featured a variety of interactive workshops focused on addressing complex environmental issues. Sessions included:

  • Environmental Hazard & Effect Assessment vs Management – exploring real-world applications of environmental science in policy and practice
  • Field Collection of Wastewater – offering hands-on skills in environmental sampling
  • Co-Design Collective: H₂O Stewardship – fostering collaborative thinking on sustainable water management
  • Creating Local Catchment Maps Using QGIS – training students in spatial data analysis for environmental planning

Participants were also treated to a rich experience of the local landscape. Wildlife sightings were abundant on and around campus, creating a memorable backdrop for the forum and underscoring the relevance of the surrounding ecosystem to environmental studies.

A group excursion day offered two unforgettable options: a wildlife-filled Game Drive in Kruger National Park or a scenic adventure through the Blyde River Canyon.

In between sessions, students enjoyed free time to network, relax, and take in the natural beauty of the area. Team-building activities and informal stress management moments—some unplanned, like when a bus broke down en route to the airport—brought humour and camaraderie to the journey.

The success of the forum was made possible through the dedication of many. Heartfelt thanks go to all staff who volunteered their time to facilitate the sessions, the organizing committee for their tireless work, and the staff at the Wits Rural Facility, who went above and beyond to ensure participants’ comfort and well-being.

This year’s forum once again highlighted the power of global collaboration in tackling environmental challenges. Students returned home energized and inspired, armed with new knowledge, lasting connections, and memories of South Africa’s landscapes, wildlife, and warm hospitality.

We look forward to building on this momentum at next year’s forum! If you’d like to hear more, check out some articles written by the workshop participants:
