The vision of the International Institute for Environmental Studies is to become a global leader in the development of research and policy for the management of environmental issues having international dimensions.
To meet this vision the Institute brings together world class research scientists and policy analysts from institutions from around the globe to work collaboratively, sharing expertise, facilities and research programs.
The mission of the IIES is to bring together scientists and policy experts from institutions
worldwide to advance collaboration in environmental science, management, and
sustainability studies through research, education, and knowledge exchange among its
member institutions and partners in government and industry.
The main objective of the Institute is to support the exchange of highly qualified personnel (HQP = faculty, postdoctoral fellows and students) among the member institutions and to foster truly international collaborative research and policy development. The Institute is headquartered at Trent university in Peterborough, Canada.
The funds of the Institute are used primarily to facilitate collaborative activities among its members. Wherever possible Institute funding supports multi‐partner collaboration. The Institute doesn’t provide research funding per se, but does support applications for research funding through its support of student and faculty travel, workshops, etc.
The IIES is a network of university, government and NGO research organizations that recognize the importance of international collaboration. It is administered by an independent Board of Directors.

The IIES annual workshops typically focus around four general themes. The themes, however, are not all-inclusive, therefore people working in other areas are always welcome.
The relationships between people and their environment, promotion of human health and well-being, and maintaining healthy and safe communities.
The commitment of organizations and government to the laws, regulations, and other policy mechanisms concerning environmental issues.
The processes related to the interaction of natural resources with humans and their environment.
The technology and science that helps to reduce human impact on the natural environment.
