Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards at Trent University

The Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards program is a one-time initiative to recruit international or returning Canadian students and postdoctoral researchers to Canada. Trent University has been allocated a total of three nominations for this award. The nominations include two awards at the Doctorate level award ($40,000/year for 3 years) and one Post-doctorate level award ($70,000/year for 2 years). 

Nominees Eligibility Criteria:

Nominees can be of any citizenship (including Canadian), but must not have any current affiliations with a Canadian institution and must be currently studying or working abroad. For the postdoctoral award: Nominees must be qualified to undertake postdoctoral research at the nominating institution in Canada as of the award activation date. 

Nominators Eligibility Criteria:

Nominees must be nominated by a current Trent University faculty member who is the primary grant holder of an eligible grant (refer to Question 17 in link) with the ability to supervise a Doctoral student and/or Post-Doctoral researcher. The nominator is not required to have a research grant specifically in one of the priority research areas, however they must be able to facilitate the nominee conducting research in one of these areas.

Important Dates:

Internal competition opened: January 12, 2026

For Nomination of Post-Doctoral Researchers:

  • Deadline for nominators to confirm their interest in nominating a  Post-Doctoral researcher to the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI): January 23, 2026.
  • Deadline to submit internal application to the ORI: February 2, 2026. 
For Nomination of PhD Students:
  • Contact the School of Graduate Studies for internal deadlines. 
 

Research Alignment

Eight strategic priority areas have been identified, however the following four are the environmentally-focused fields:

  • Clean Technology and Resource Value Chains
  • Environment, Climate Resilience and the Arctic
  • Food and Water Security
  • Manufacturing and Advanced Materials

Nominees’ research areas must be within one of the eight identified priority research areas.

Other restrictions

  • Nominees can only be nominated by one nominator.
  • International students/researchers already working or studying at a Canadian institution are not eligible for the Impact+ training awards.
  • Nominees cannot be currently holding another scholarship or postdoctoral research award from the three agencies or be currently benefiting from tri-agency funds from a supervisor’s grant.
  • Nominees cannot hold a tenure or tenure-track appointment or be on leave from such an appointment concurrently with the Impact+ training award.
  • Doctoral: Cannot have previously held doctoral-level scholarship from one of the three agencies.
  • Postdoctoral: Cannot have previously held postdoctoral-level award from one of the three agencies.

How to Apply

For Nominators:

  • For Nomination of Post-Doctoral Fellows: Contact Trent’s Office of Research and Innovation (ORI). Researchers who plan on nominating a Post-Doctoral Fellow are encouraged to submit their expression of interest as soon as possible, even if the nominee is still unknown. 
  • For nomination of Doctoral students: Contact the School of Graduate Studies. 

For Potential Nominees: Contact your potential supervisor directly.
