Isotope Hydrology | Trent University Course

Registration is now open for the new online course/workshop at Trent University, Isotope Hydrology. This course will introduce participants to the principles of stable isotope geochemistry as applied to catchment hydrology and ecohydrology, providing a broader understanding of environmental research in the hydrosphere. The course will be co-led by a team of instructors with diverse backgrounds who actively use isotopes in their research, ensuring a rich learning experience while exposing participants to different topics.

Contributing Institutions and Organizations: University of British Columbia (Canada), USGS (USA), John Hopkins University (USA), University of Saskatchewan (Canada), McGill University (Canada), ECCC (Canada), University of Victoria (Canada), Trent University (Canada), US EPA (USA), University of Calgary (Canada).

The course workshop runs from April 7–11, 2025. Students taking the course for credit will continue on with hands on activities and discussions in the following week (April 14–17, 2025). The course is FREE for Trent University students, IIES students, and associated institutions of this course, and lectures are available to anyone interested. Students attending from institutions outside of Trent University, the IIES, and associated institutions will have to pay a registration fee. Please see below for seminar information:

Isotope Hydrology Course

Location: Online Zoom Meeting
Registration Fee: $129.00 (free for IIES members plus associated institutions)
Date: April 7–11, 2025*
Start Time: 9:00am
End Time: 2:30pm–3:45pm (varies per day, see schedule below)
**All times are in EST (GMT -05:00)

*Students taking the course for credit will continue on with hands on activities and discussions in the following week (April 14th to 17th)
**Be sure to check your local time zone to ensure you don’t miss the lectures.

Location

The course will be offered in a hybrid format, with some instructors delivering lectures in person (Trent University, Peterborough), and others online. This flexible approach allows participants to attend either in person or remotely via Zoom. We will send the Zoom participation link to all registered participants. If you have not received the link, please check your junk mail folder first. Should you still not find it, feel free to contact Raquel at .

Course Objective

This course will introduce participants to the principles of stable isotope geochemistry applied to catchment hydrology and more broadly, to environmental research in the hydrosphere and biosphere. The course will focus on stable isotope measurement and tracing techniques and the linkage of these tracers in and among hydrologic and biological components of earth system at the catchment scale. We will specifically consider the application of stable isotope investigative tools to a variety of hydrological situations, ranging from water cycle dynamics, runoff processes, bio- and geochemical processes, nutrients and contamination and isotope ecohydrology.

Important Information

This virtual workshop is not for credit and is open to anyone from anywhere! You do not need to be a Trent University student or from a partner institution of the IIES to register. However, there is a registration fee for non-Trent University students, -IIES members, and personnel from -contributing Institutions and organizations (listed above). Registration to the virtual workshop will give you access to all five days of course lectures via online streaming and participation in all discussions. The cost for the workshop is $129.00 CAD (includes applicable taxes).

Ontario Visiting Graduate Student

If you are a student from an Ontario University and are interested in completing this course for credit as part of the OVGS Program, please contact your home institution’s Graduate Studies Program to request the appropriate documents in order to get approval to do so. Once you receive the approval from your institution, please contact Raquel at to provide the appropriate documentation. Once we receive this approval, you can access the course details for free and do not have to pay the registration fee.
