In October 2022 at the 7th Annual IIES Science & Policy Workshop, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) in Vietnam was formally welcomed as the newest IIES member. The MOU signed, aims to facilitate cooperation in academic research related to environmental problems and contribute to developing science and innovation between Vietnam and Canada.
To expand this collaboration established by the IIES and Trent University, Professor Huy Dang recently led a group of Trent faculty and graduate student researchers to Vietnam, to partner with researchers at HCMUT to investigate environmental pollution, sustainable agriculture and carbon capture. While in Vietnam the group collected samples from ecologically diverse landscapes such as the Can Gio Mangrove Forest and Cat Tien National Park, two essential UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in Southern Vietnam.
“To become a member of IIES, it brings a great deal of benefits to researchers and students of HCMUT. Its researchers and students not only join the IIES programs, but also have opportunities to make a relationship with other universities and members of the IIES network. The environmental challenges that we are collectively facing requires just these kinds of partnerships. This means that more connections will be broadened and built up; more collaboration opportunities will also be deepened.”
Professor Vo Le Phu | Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources at HMCUT
With HCMUT joining the IIES network, we continue to expand our connection in Southeast Asia. In 2021, the Institute for Circular Economy Development (ICED), also in Ho Chi Minh City, joined IIES and co-hosted a virtual workshop on circular economy development.
IIES is committed to becoming a global leader in developing environmental resources and policies for managing environmental issues with international implications. We continue to offer in-person and virtual events to support this mission, including annual scientific workshops, graduate student forums, and online seminar series. These offerings enhance capacity, knowledge, and collaboration.
