The IIES is proud to announce the publication of Mangroves in the Anthropocene: Climate Change and Conservation Challenges, a collaborative volume produced in partnership with the International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME). This publication marks the latest instalment in the ISME Mangrove Ecosystems Technical Reports series (Volume 7), and was developed directly from the IIES-hosted online lecture series of the same name.
The freely available recorded lectures that inspired the book can be accessed on the IIES YouTube channel here, offering a unique opportunity for educators, researchers, students, and practitioners to engage with cutting-edge mangrove science at no cost.

Edited by a distinguished international team—Luiz Drude de Lacerda (Federal University of Ceará, Brazil), Hayla E. Evans (Water Quality Center, Trent University, Canada), and Shigeyuki Baba and Hung Tuck Chan (ISME, Japan)—the book compiles nine chapters contributed by experts from six countries. Topics range from blue carbon and nutrient cycling to local conservation strategies and the socioeconomic value of mangrove ecosystems.
We extend our deepest thanks to Professor Luiz Drude de Lacerda, who played an instrumental role in organizing the original lecture series and in coordinating the publication of this volume. His leadership and scientific insight were vital to every stage of this project.
As highlighted in the book’s preface, mangrove ecosystems, though covering less than one percent of tropical forests, have an outsized impact on coastal resilience, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration. These complex and vital ecosystems are increasingly vulnerable to deforestation, sea-level rise, and other anthropogenic stressors, making the science and strategies presented in this volume more urgent than ever.
The IIES is honoured to support this publication and share it with our global network. A full digital copy of Mangroves in the Anthropocene: Climate Change and Conservation Challenges will be made freely available in the link below.
We invite all those working in environmental science, coastal management, policy, and education to explore the book and join us in advancing mangrove conservation and climate resilience.
